Suicide –under the light of Social Fact

Suicide is common factor of all time and of all society.  Difference is only in the rate of suicide. Suicide is such factor and is connected so deeply with all time society that we cannot remove this social pathogen from the journey of time.  Most of the time suicide is only described under the light of psychological fact but as every fact it has others dimensions to look. One of this is social dimension. Many sociologist work on this issue as this fact of suicide but most pronounced study is done by pioneer sociologist Emile Durkheim. He gave four types of suicide and in all these four types he mainly focus that what role society play behind suicide and those types are:

Egoistic Suicide- In this type Durkheim describes that individual person who belongs to a large society feel separated from all social bonds and this lack of integration motivate him/ her to think him or her life meaningless. Decline of integrity causes loosing social support that may trigger him to commit egoistic suicide as here individual feels hopeless as they thought they fail to fulfil their own others desire and feel worthlessness .

Altruistic Suicide- In this type effect of social Integration is too high. In this type individual person thought it is his/ her duty to commit suicide for collective benefits of society.  Here great values, customs motivated that individual to do so. For example Military men and freedom fighters always ready to sacrifice their life for great values.

Anomic Suicide- In this type Durkheim said that society has no control over individual desires and this resulted that individual having uncontrolled desire and spent all time and immense energy after fulfilling his/her desire and as most of the times all of these are impossible desires and that incompleteness of desires leads to dissatisfaction and hopelessness and may influenced individual to commit suicide as they thought without fulfillment of this desire, life become worthless.

Fatalistic Suicide- These is the last type of those four types of suicide and in this Durkheim described that sometime society or circumstances controlled individual so much that it become a suffocating situation for that person and when that person failed to find out the way of getting free form this situation he/she choose the path of suicide as this kind of oppression destroy one’s moral values and as well as leads to disturb the psychological balance.
