Spiritual aspect of tattoos

In present days, having tattoos is a craze among the people mainly from younger generations. But this concept of tattoos is not modern. It comes from very primitive culture. Many researchers studied many tribal such as Australian tribe, the people of Native Americans, Europeans, Mid –Easters, and various tribe of Asia to know this tattoo culture deeply.  In 1991, a well preserved mummy of ” Alpine  iceman” was found which is thought about 5000 years old, having tattoos all over its body.  There is a concept vogue among the tribal which is named totem, related with sacred and profane concept, means any things or living object which represent certain clan and believed to have some supernatural power for which caused it is worship. Among tribal community they draw the picture of their own totem on their body and also on their weapons and they have strong believed that it will give power and protect them. This tattoo brings social prestige to the tribal and it also carries true culture of the clan. Not only this, by studying Australian tribe, in Emile Durkheim’s book “The Elementary Forms of Religious Life” he said that they even draw this kind of symbols on their dead bodies. This kind of tattoos are called totem pole tattoo.

There is various kind of symbol which is believed to have spiritual power but among them the frigate bird is one of the popular motifs which are widely found among New Guinea and also in Rapa Nui (Easter Island). This frigate bird is connected to the Birdman deity or in some cultures it also represents the host of the spirit of dead. On the other side some tribe do tattoos to increase the beauty along with spiritual power like Fulani tribe of Nigeria draw symbols on the marriageable girl’s face.  Some tribes also paints their bodies like demons to get acceptance from demons like as Maori tribe.

Thus it can be concluded that tattoo is an expression of beautiful art that comes with spiritual values.
